Below is a compilation of helpful Korean language tools and some of the Korean language knowledge I have gained since my immersion.
-Learn Korean phone application: great for audio representation of unknown vocabulary and phrases (has ability to slow audio playback to hear individual sounds)
-Lonely Planet Korean Phrasebook & Dictionary: This book provides the most useful Korean phrases in the front of the book and the rest of the book is divided into different sections of important conversation topics and emergency phrases. Most of the phrases you could ever need while traveling in Korea are in this phrasebook and the back has an English to Korean dictionary and a Korean to English dictionary.
-http://www.aeriagloris.com/LearnKorean/ :This is a great website to practice Hangul in an entertaining way.
Throughout the six weeks here in South Korea I have developed Korean language skills in my various interactions in local coffee shops, convenience stores, restaurants, taxi cabs, etc. I have found that the most effective language acquisition strategy for me is to hear the correct way to successfully complete an interaction in Korean and replicate this in my own interactions. I have also learned to listen intuitively to the responses to my various requests and have learned key phrases in this manner.
One important skill that I have been working on that has been useful in many conversations are the number systems and the correct counters. This enables me to correctly order food/drinks and communicate how many people there are in various settings.
The above knowledge I gained throughout my experience here in South Korea helped me successfully communicate daily while developing positive relationships with local shop owners.
